Getting started

Create your first product

Add a product name, SKU and category, then enter a GTIN if the product has one. Save the record before creating its passport.

DPP Shield editorial team · Updated:

In DPP Shield, open Products and choose New product. Select the product category, enter its name and SKU, and add a GTIN if it has one. Save the record, then create a passport from the product page. DPP Shield checks the GTIN’s check digit and whether another organization on the platform has claimed it.

What do you need before creating a product?

Gather the product name, internal SKU, category and manufacturer details. Have the GTIN ready if the product has one, and identify the team member responsible for the record.

How do you create the product record?

  1. Open Products and choose New product.
  2. Select the category that fits the product. In DPP Shield, this selection determines the passport schema and validation rule pack.
  3. Enter the name, SKU, and any known brand and manufacturer details. Add the GTIN if the product has one.
  4. Save the product record. You can then create a passport from its product page.

What if the GTIN is rejected?

Check the digits against your source record. DPP Shield rejects a GTIN with an invalid check digit or one already claimed by another organization on the platform. Where the operator requires GS1 company-prefix verification, the GTIN must also fall under a prefix your organization has verified in Settings.

How should you manage product identifiers?

Keep identifiers consistent with your source systems. Once the product’s passport is published, its identity fields are locked. Create a new product record for a different item rather than reusing the published record.
