Frequently asked questions

Answers to common digital product passport questions: deadlines, the EU DPP Registry, cost, GS1 Digital Link and QR codes, and who needs a DPP.

What is a digital product passport?

A digital product passport (DPP) is a structured digital record about one product, reachable from a data carrier such as a QR code. Under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, product-specific rules decide which products need one and what it must contain.

Which products need a digital product passport?

Only products covered by an EU act that requires one. Batteries are first: the Batteries Regulation requires a battery passport for light-means-of-transport, EV and industrial batteries above 2 kWh from 18 February 2027. Other groups follow as ESPR delegated acts are adopted.

Does the platform certify legal compliance?

No. Rule packs and validation find gaps in your data, and bundled packs are starting points that need legal review. Your organization stays responsible for the accuracy of its data and for the rules that apply to each product.

Who can publish a passport?

Organization owners and admins. Publishing is refused while a mandatory requirement is unmet; publishing anyway needs a written override approved by a second person, and where a second factor is enrolled it must be confirmed moments before publishing.

What becomes public when I publish?

The approved version of the passport, minus any fields you redacted. By default exact substance concentrations and per-line material masses are published as ranges and shares. Check the public preview before sharing a link or code.

Can I update a published passport?

Yes. Edits create a new version while the published one stays live, so the QR code never goes dark. The new version replaces it only when it passes the publication gate, and every earlier version stays in the history.

What happens to a passport when a product is recalled?

The passport stays public and shows a recall notice, because a recall is when people most need to reach it. Its signed credentials are revoked and a recall event is sent to connected systems.

How does a QR code reach the right passport?

The code carries a GS1 Digital Link such as /01/{GTIN}/21/{serial}. The resolver finds the published passport for that GTIN, batch and serial. A GTIN can only be claimed by one organization on the platform, so a code cannot be taken over by another tenant.

Can I invite suppliers to contribute?

Yes. You can send suppliers a request for specific data and documents; they answer through a portal without an account. Their answers stay linked to the record and are reviewed before they are used in a passport.

Can someone verify that a passport is authentic?

Yes. Published passports can carry a signed verifiable credential. Anyone can check it on the verification page against the issuer's published key, and see whether it has been revoked or superseded by a newer version.

In which languages can a passport be published?

Passport content can be offered in all 24 official EU languages. Machine translation only produces drafts; a person approves each language before it is published. These information pages are available in English, French and Spanish.

Is the passport data kept after a product leaves the market?

Yes. A retired passport stays publicly readable for the retention period, and archived or recalled passports keep their last published release. Audit records are append-only and hash-chained so changes can be detected.

Can I connect my own systems?

Yes. The platform has a REST API with scoped API keys, signed webhooks for lifecycle events, CSV and JSON import, and GS1 EPCIS 2.0 event export and import for traceability partners.

How do subscriptions and payments work?

Plans and usage limits are shown in the workspace and on the pricing page. Paid checkout requires a configured Stripe connection; plans priced by agreement are arranged with the operator.

How much does Digital Product Passport software cost?

DPP Shield offers plans with different limits for products, passports, documents, suppliers, workspaces and team seats. Current prices and included capabilities are shown on the pricing page; larger deployments can request a tailored quote.

How do I create an EU Digital Product Passport?

Start by identifying the EU rules and product category that apply, then create a product record, collect the required supplier evidence, validate the data, review the public and restricted fields, and publish the approved passport behind its data carrier. DPP Shield supports that workflow but does not decide your legal obligations.

Does DPP Shield support GS1 Digital Link and DPP QR codes?

Yes. DPP Shield can generate QR and DataMatrix carriers using GS1 Digital Link paths for a GTIN and, where needed, a batch or serial number. Verify your GS1 identifier ownership and test the printed carrier before production.

Can an importer create a Digital Product Passport?

The responsible economic operator depends on the applicable product rule and supply-chain role. An importer can operate a passport workspace and publish reviewed records in DPP Shield, but should confirm who carries the legal duty for the specific product and market.

Can DPP Shield connect to the EU DPP Registry?

DPP Shield computes and checks the unique product identifier the Registry needs for each published release, prepares registration data for up to 100 passports at a time and records the Registry's answer with the release. The verified economic operator registers in the Registry's own form or file upload. Per the Commission's guide of 16 September 2026, registrations cannot succeed yet.

When does a digital product passport become mandatory?

There is no single date. Each product group gets its own timeline through EU legislation or an ESPR delegated act. The first binding EU deadline is 18 February 2027 for battery passports; groups such as textiles follow once their delegated acts are adopted and published.

When is the textile DPP due?

No textile date is fixed yet. Textiles are a priority group in the ESPR 2025-2030 working plan, but the delegated act that would set the requirements and application date has not been adopted. Treat any circulating year as an estimate until it appears in the Official Journal.

Is the EU DPP Registry live?

Yes. The Commission announced the operational EU DPP Registry on 20 July 2026, and organizations can enrol. It indexes passport identifiers and required metadata; detailed data stays with the economic operator or its service provider. Per the Commission's guide of 16 September 2026, registrations cannot succeed yet because the batteries catalogue is still being defined.

Do non-EU manufacturers need a digital product passport?

Often, yes. DPP obligations follow the product and the EU market, not the seller's location. A non-EU manufacturer selling into the EU usually needs the passport prepared, though the legal duty may sit with the importer or an EU authorised representative. Confirm the responsible operator per product.

What is the difference between a DPP and a QR code?

A QR code is only a data carrier, a link. The digital product passport is the structured, governed record it points to. The same passport can also be reached through a GS1 Digital Link or an NFC tag, so the QR code is one route to it, not the passport itself.
