A Digital Product Passport is a product-linked digital record whose required content and access rights come from applicable EU product rules. An Environmental Product Declaration is a programme-based declaration of quantified environmental impacts, normally based on life-cycle assessment and product category rules. An EPD may supply evidence for some DPP fields, but the two are not interchangeable.
What does each record describe?
A DPP can cover identity, materials, substances, repair, compliance and lifecycle information, with the exact fields set by the applicable act. An EPD concentrates on quantified environmental impacts and the rules of its declaration programme.
Does an EPD replace a DPP?
No. An EPD can be a useful evidence source where its product scope, period and methodology match a required DPP value, but it does not by itself provide the identifiers, access rules, update process, carrier or registry workflow of a DPP.
How should teams reuse EPD data?
Map each reused value to its source declaration, functional unit, product scope, validity period and method. Keep the EPD attached as evidence and do not present programme verification as verification of the complete passport.
Frequently asked questions
Is a DPP a life-cycle assessment?
No. A DPP is a data container and access system. It may include LCA-derived values when the applicable product rule asks for them.
Can an EPD be linked to a DPP?
Yes. It can be linked as evidence when it genuinely covers the product and value being declared.
