ESPR and the Digital Product Passport

How the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) introduces the Digital Product Passport, which product groups it targets, and how to prepare.

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, is the framework law that introduces the Digital Product Passport across product categories. It establishes the passport; product-specific delegated acts then define the exact data, timing and access for each group.

What does ESPR require?

ESPR sets ecodesign requirements and the Digital Product Passport as a framework, then delegates the detail to product-specific acts. Priority groups named in its work include textiles and iron and steel, with more to follow. The precise obligations for a product come from its delegated act, not from ESPR alone.

How does the DPP fit into ESPR?

The passport is ESPR's mechanism for sharing structured product information along the value chain and with authorities. Identifiers are indexed in the EU DPP Registry, and the data is reached through a carrier such as a QR code, while detailed data stays with the responsible operator.

How to prepare for ESPR delegated acts

Assign stable identifiers, structure the likely data points, link evidence to each claim, and keep a gap list per product. Delegated acts usually apply at least 18 months after they enter into force, so early data work turns that window into gap-filling rather than a scramble.

Frequently asked questions

Is ESPR the same as the DPP?

No. ESPR is the regulation; the Digital Product Passport is one of the instruments it introduces, alongside ecodesign requirements.

When does ESPR apply to my product?

Per product category, through its delegated act. Batteries have their own regulation; textiles and other ESPR groups follow their own dates.
