Build a passport for iron, steel and aluminium products

Intermediate metal products ahead of the ESPR acts: grade, recycled content, carbon footprint and mill certificates.

DPP Shield editorial team · Updated:

Iron, steel and aluminium are priority intermediate products in the ESPR working plan, with no passport act adopted yet. DPP Shield's metals pack records what those acts and carbon reporting are expected to need: the grade, the production route, recycled (scrap) content, the carbon footprint per kilogram with its declaration, and the mill test certificate.

What applies today

No metals passport is mandatory yet. Carbon reporting already exists for imports under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (Regulation (EU) 2023/956), and EN 10204 inspection documents (mill test certificates) are standard practice for traceability.

The pack's fields model the data the ESPR intermediate-products acts are expected to require; verify the scope and dates before relying on it.

What the pack checks

DPP Shield validates a passport against the bundled EU-METALS pack, which is a draft readiness pack, plus the ESPR core checks every category shares: identifiers, the economic operator, the data carrier, substances of concern and passport availability. Required findings block publication; findings to check are flagged for review. Each finding in the console names its rule and source.

Required - blocks publication

  • The grade or designation that identifies the product.

What it flags for review

These do not block publication, but resolve each one before the passport goes public.

Check - flagged for review

  • Manufacturer identity.
  • Recycled (scrap) content.
  • The cradle-to-gate carbon footprint per kilogram.
  • A mill test certificate (EN 10204) reference for the batch.

Evidence to collect

Attach these in Documents and link them to the passport, or request them from suppliers.

Typical evidence

  • Mill test certificates per heat number.
  • Scrap content declarations from the mill.
  • Carbon footprint studies or CBAM embedded-emission data, with their methodology.
  • The product standard the grade follows.

Build the passport step by step

  1. Create the product with the category Metals - in Products, by CSV import or from a connected store.
  2. Open DPPs and choose Create passport: the form shows the metals fields together with the shared blocks (identifiers, manufacturer, materials, substances of concern, data carrier and passport availability).
  3. Record the metal type, product form, grade and product standard.
  4. Record the production route, for example blast furnace or electric arc furnace.
  5. Fill the carbon footprint declaration - methodology, life-cycle boundary, functional unit, verification - next to the figure.
  6. Attach the evidence in Documents and send supplier requests for anything you cannot support yourself.
  7. Run Validate EU and work through the findings until no required finding is left.
  8. Preview the public page, redact commercially sensitive fields, then publish.

Before you publish

Because the bundled packs are drafts, publishing needs an accountable override approved by a second owner or administrator until your platform operator activates a legally reviewed pack. The readiness score is not a legal assessment: confirm the obligations that apply to your product with your compliance adviser.

The public passport shows the carbon figure with its declaration; a figure without methodology and boundary is shown as an unverified self-declaration.
