Automotive digital product passport

Vehicle and component identity, materials, traceability, repair, reuse and recovery.

Automotive passport preparation should connect vehicle, battery and component identifiers with materials, supplier evidence, repair information and lifecycle events while keeping sector-specific records distinct.

Regulatory position

Regulations and applicability

The rules below do different jobs. Some are enforceable sector requirements, some establish the DPP architecture, and some announce future product measures. Each card explains the distinction.

Current requirement01

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 (Batteries)

What it covers
The Batteries Regulation applies directly to EV batteries and introduces their battery passport from 18 February 2027.
What it means for the record
Model the traction battery as its own regulated asset linked to the vehicle; do not use the vehicle record as a substitute for the battery-level passport.
DPP framework02

Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (ESPR)

What it covers
ESPR provides a horizontal framework for product measures but does not automatically impose one passport dataset on the complete vehicle.
What it means for the record
Maintain separate vehicle, battery and component identities and map shared material or lifecycle data through explicit relationships.
Data to structure

Recommended passport structure

Organize the record in stable blocks so identity, technical facts, evidence and access rules can change without losing provenance.

01

Identity and scope

Defines exactly which model, batch or item the record describes.

Questions teams ask

Does the battery passport cover the whole vehicle?

No. The battery passport applies to the battery in scope. Vehicle and other component information may be governed by separate rules.

What data structure should a Automotive passport use?

Organize at least four governed blocks: Vehicle, model and component identifiers; Material and critical-component composition; Battery, repair and software-support information; Reuse, remanufacturing and recovery events. Every value should retain its source, effective date, product level and review status.

Which evidence should support the Automotive passport?

The evidence file should cover Type-approval and conformity documents; Battery and component supplier declarations; Repair and maintenance information; Dismantling and end-of-life records. A public view can cite approved evidence without exposing restricted files or confidential data.
