Metals (iron, steel, aluminium) digital product passport

Grade, production route, recycled content, embodied carbon and mill-certificate traceability.

A metals passport record should preserve grade and batch identity, production route, recycled content, embodied-carbon basis and certificate traceability across downstream products.

Regulatory position

Regulations and applicability

The rules below do different jobs. Some are enforceable sector requirements, some establish the DPP architecture, and some announce future product measures. Each card explains the distinction.

Planned measure01

ESPR and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2025-2030

What it covers
Iron, steel and aluminium are priority intermediate products in the ESPR working plan, with indicative adoption in 2026 for iron and steel and 2027 for aluminium.
What it means for the record
Prepare grade, production route, recycled content and carbon data at heat, batch or product level, but confirm final granularity against the adopted measure.
Related sector rule02

European Commission: Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

What it covers
CBAM reporting concerns embedded emissions for covered imported goods and has a distinct customs and carbon-accounting purpose.
What it means for the record
Reuse verified facility and emissions source data where appropriate, but keep CBAM declarations and passport claims as separate governed outputs.
DPP framework03

Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (ESPR)

What it covers
ESPR defines the common information and passport architecture for future product measures.
What it means for the record
Use open, transferable records so verified metal data can flow into downstream construction, automotive, battery and appliance passports.
Data to structure

Recommended passport structure

Organize the record in stable blocks so identity, technical facts, evidence and access rules can change without losing provenance.

01

Scope

Identify the exact product, economic-operator role, market and applicable legislation.

02

Map

Map authoritative source records to stable product, operator and facility identifiers.

03

Validate

Review completeness, consistency, access rights and the evidence behind each claim.

04

Questions teams ask

Are CBAM data and a DPP the same?

No. They can share source data, but CBAM reporting and product-passport requirements have different legal purposes and scopes.

What data structure should a Metals (iron, steel, aluminium) passport use?

Organize at least four governed blocks: Grade, form, batch or heat and producer identity; Production route and facility; Recycled content and material origin; Embodied carbon and downstream custody. Every value should retain its source, effective date, product level and review status.

Which evidence should support the Metals (iron, steel, aluminium) passport?

The evidence file should cover Mill test certificates; Supplier and origin declarations; Carbon calculation and verification records; Chain-of-custody documents. A public view can cite approved evidence without exposing restricted files or confidential data.
