Register a passport in the EU DPP Registry

Who can register, the identifier a registration names, how DPP Shield prepares and checks it, and how to record the Registry's answer.

DPP Shield editorial team · Updated:

Only verified economic operators can register a passport. DPP Shield computes and checks each published release's unique product identifier against the Registry's rules, prepares the registration data for up to 100 passports at a time, and records the Registry's correlation ID and outcome with the release. The Commission's guide of 16 September 2026 states that successful registrations are not yet possible, because the semantic catalogue for batteries, the first product group, is not yet defined.

What the Registry holds

The EU DPP Registry, run by the European Commission under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778, indexes the unique identifiers of passports and the link to where each passport lives. The passport data itself stays with the passport service, here on DPP Shield.

Who can register

Your organization enrols in the Registry with an EU Login and is verified: the legal representative signs a declaration with a qualified electronic signature, or the organization seals it with a qualified electronic seal (eIDAS). A qualified certificate alone is not enough; it must be used through a qualified signature or seal creation device. The Registry's test environment uses the same verification.

What a registration names

A registration is small: it identifies the passport and where it resolves.

Registration content

  • The Unique Product Identifier (UPI): an https URL that resolves to the passport, at most 2,000 characters. DPP Shield uses the GS1 Digital Link of the product (with batch and serial where present), or the passport's own address when there is no GTIN.
  • The level of registration: model, batch or item. Batteries are registered at item level, so a battery passport needs a serial number.
  • Optionally the model identifier and the batch identifier.

Register a release

  1. Publish the passport; only a published release is registered. The passport page shows its unique product identifier and anything the Registry would reject, such as a missing serial number or a product group the Registry does not accept yet.
  2. In the EU DPP Registry, register the identifier with the online form, or upload the Registry's JSON or XML template filled with up to 100 passports. Every identifier must be unique in the file, and one invalid entry rejects the whole file.
  3. The Registry returns a correlation ID, then PROCESSING, SUCCESS with the registration URI, or FAILURE with an error. On the passport page, choose Record Registry answer (owners and administrators) and enter what the Registry returned.

Status and new versions

The release shows not registered, processing at the Registry, registered (with the registration URI) or failed (with the Registry's error). Each answer is written to the audit log. Each newly published version is a new release with its own registration record.

Where the platform operator has connected DPP Shield directly to a registry API, the passport page offers Submit to registry instead and records the receipt automatically, retrying interrupted submissions.
