Medical devices digital product passport

Device identifiers, manufacturer data, materials, evidence and lifecycle traceability.

A medical-device readiness record should map UDI and device identity to manufacturer, materials, technical documentation, safety evidence and lifecycle traceability without presenting the DPP as a substitute for MDR duties.

Regulatory position

Regulations and applicability

The rules below do different jobs. Some are enforceable sector requirements, some establish the DPP architecture, and some announce future product measures. Each card explains the distinction.

Current requirement01

Regulation (EU) 2017/745 on medical devices

What it covers
The Medical Devices Regulation establishes classification, conformity assessment, technical documentation, post-market surveillance, UDI and EUDAMED-related duties.
What it means for the record
Use Basic UDI-DI, UDI-DI and UDI-PI at their correct levels. A passport view must link to—not duplicate inconsistently—the authoritative device and conformity records.
DPP framework02

Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 (ESPR)

What it covers
ESPR is a horizontal sustainability framework; medical-device obligations remain governed by sector law where applicable.
What it means for the record
Do not present a generic DPP as replacing UDI, CE marking, clinical evidence, technical documentation or vigilance responsibilities.

Questions teams ask

Does a DPP replace UDI or EUDAMED?

No. Existing medical-device identifiers and regulatory systems remain authoritative; integrations should map them rather than create conflicting identities.

What data structure should a Medical devices passport use?

Organize at least four governed blocks: UDI, device and manufacturer identity; Materials and critical components; Intended purpose, safety and performance; Distribution, servicing and lifecycle traceability. Every value should retain its source, effective date, product level and review status.

Which evidence should support the Medical devices passport?

The evidence file should cover Technical documentation; Clinical and conformity evidence; Post-market surveillance records; Supplier and quality-management records. A public view can cite approved evidence without exposing restricted files or confidential data.
